Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Capital Epiphysis following an undisplaced Cervicotrochanteric Fracture in a Child

Abstract
Hip fractures in children are rare as compared to hip fractures in adults with osteoporosis. But they frequently pose serious problems by avascular necrosis of the femoral capital epiphysis, growth disturbance and malunion.
Cervicotrochanteric fracture, which is one of the commonest type, is reported to be frequently complicated with an avascular necrosis of the femoral head. However, avascular necrosis of all the reported cases following cervicotrochanteric fracture developed after a displaced fracture.
This paper presents a 9-year-old girl who sustained an undisplaced cervicotrochanteric fracture and developed avascular necrosis 10 months after the initial injury.
The present author emphasizes the importance of careful clinical and radiographic follow up examination in children with undisplaced cervicotrochanteric, fracture for early detection of the development of avascular necrosis of the femoral head.
